WhatsApp May Soon Let Users Chat With Third-Party AI Agents Directly

 

WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature that could allow users to connect third-party AI agents and bots directly to the messaging platform. The upcoming functionality is expected to give each connected AI agent its own dedicated chat, allowing users to interact with AI-powered services without leaving WhatsApp.The feature is reportedly being tested with a limited number of Android users and could be expanded to more accounts in the coming months. However, WhatsApp has not officially confirmed the feature or revealed when it will be available to everyone.

WhatsApp Testing Dedicated Chats for Third-Party AI Agents

According to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the new functionality has been spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.35.3. The feature could introduce a new Agents section within WhatsApp's settings, where users can add and manage compatible third-party AI services.Users may be able to assign a custom name and profile picture to each connected agent. WhatsApp could reportedly support up to five AI agents per account, although this limit may change before the feature receives a wider rollout.Once an agent is configured, WhatsApp is expected to generate an API key. Users would then need to enter this key into the service hosting the AI agent to establish a connection with a dedicated WhatsApp chat.The exact setup process could vary depending on the third-party service. Users may also be able to generate a new API key if they want to reset or reconnect an agent.

AI Agents Could Have Their Own WhatsApp Chats

After successfully connecting an AI agent, it would reportedly operate through its own individual WhatsApp conversation. This could make it easier for users to communicate with different AI services in the same way they chat with other contacts.Importantly, the connected agent would reportedly have no access to the user's other WhatsApp chats, contacts or media. Third-party agents are also not expected to work inside group chats or WhatsApp Communities.Users could manage their connected agents directly through WhatsApp's settings. Options may include changing an agent's name or profile picture and removing an existing connection.If an agent is removed, the existing conversation history would reportedly remain available in WhatsApp. Users could potentially reconnect the same service later by completing the setup process again and generating a new API key.

WhatsApp AI Agent Chats May Not Have End-to-End Encryption

One of the most important aspects of the reported feature concerns privacy.Chats with third-party AI agents reportedly would not use WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption. Messages sent to an AI agent could pass through a Meta service on behalf of the agent's developer, allowing the developer to access those messages as part of the service.This would be different from regular personal WhatsApp conversations and calls, which continue to use end-to-end encryption.Users should therefore be aware that conversations with third-party AI agents may have different privacy protections compared with their normal WhatsApp chats.

WhatsApp AI Agents Feature Availability

The reported AI agent functionality is currently being rolled out to a limited number of Android beta users.
